Gas-to-Power Strategy Saves Ghana Over $268 Million in Fuel Costs
The Government's Gas-to-Power Strategy has achieved significant savings in fuel costs during the first half of 2026. According to Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, the strategy has generated over GH¢3.08 billion in savings, equivalent to US$268.5 million.
This was made possible by replacing light crude oil with natural gas for electricity generation, resulting in a reduction of at least 75% in electricity generation costs.
The increased gas supply has strengthened electricity generation and significantly reduced fuel costs. By the end of June 2026, the Government had increased gas supply for power generation by an additional 35 million standard cubic feet per day, bringing total supply to about 490 million standard cubic feet per day.
