GCC Condemns Drone Attack on Saudi Pipeline
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) condemned a drone attack on Saudi Arabia's East-West Pipeline in Riyadh and Madinah regions, which it said originated from Iraq. The pipeline was shut down as a precautionary measure after several drones struck the oil pipeline, injuring people and causing property damage.
GCC secretary-general Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi described the attack as a 'dangerous escalation' and a 'flagrant violation of the principles of international law.' He urged Iraq to take decisive measures to prevent its territory from being used for such attacks. The GCC reaffirmed its solidarity with Saudi Arabia, voicing full support for all measures taken by Riyadh to protect its security.
Saudi Arabia said it had decided not to retaliate against Iraq 'at this stage' after Baghdad's prime minister asked them to allow the kingdom to take measures to prevent further attacks. Tensions between Riyadh and Baghdad have been rising since July, when Saudi Arabia intercepted several drones launched from Iraq toward oil facilities.
