Gen Z and the Peak Oil Reality Check

The concept of peak oil is often misunderstood as running out of energy entirely. However, it refers to the maximum rate of global oil extraction prior to its inevitable decline due to depletion or falling demand.

Since we live on a finite planet, extracting nonrenewable natural resources today reduces the amount that can be extracted in the future. As individual oilwells, oilfields, and countries become depleted, production rates inevitably decline.

The peak oil discussion is not about completely running out of oil; rather, it's about the rate at which we extract and use this resource. Currently, global society burns through over 83 million barrels of crude per day, a rate that can't be sustained indefinitely.
