Gen Z Gives India's Gold Market a Digital Makeover
The World Gold Council's vision for India's gold market has taken flight. In its landmark report, Swarnim Udaan 2047, released in August 2026, the council outlines a 21-year roadmap to transform India's gold economy. The plan focuses on making India self-reliant in gold production and reducing import dependence.
According to the report, domestic mining should meet 10-15% of India's annual gold demand by 2047. To achieve this goal, the government has proposed designating gold as a 'Strategic Mineral' under the MMDR Act. This move aims to provide stronger exploration incentives for early-stage mining and streamline clearances.
The council also recommends creating a National Gold Board to coordinate stakeholders and align policies. The board would rationalise regulation, strengthen market infrastructure, and monitor implementation of the roadmap.
Gen Z is driving this change in India's gold market. They are increasingly turning to digital gold as a convenient way to build wealth. Digital gold allows investors to start with small amounts, making it more accessible than traditional physical purchases. The council estimates that monetising 1% of India's idle household gold annually could reduce import dependence and unlock significant economic value.
