German Utility Uniper Secures Long-Term LNG Deal with Canadian Project

Uniper, a German utility company, has signed a formal 20-year supply deal to purchase liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the $30-billion Ksi Lisims project in northern British Columbia.

The agreement will see Uniper receive two million tonnes of LNG per year for up to 20 years, with first deliveries expected in 2032. This marks the first major long-term LNG supply deal between Canada and Germany, according to a joint news release from Ksi Lisims and Uniper.

Uniper's CEO, Michael Lewis, stated that Canada helps diversify Europe's energy supply and strengthens resilience against future disruptions.

Ksi Lisims is being developed by Western LNG, a Houston-based company, in partnership with the Nisga'a Nation and Rockies LNG. The project has an estimated capital cost of $30 billion and could represent 13% of Canada's total natural gas exports by the early-to-mid 2030s.

However, environmental groups have expressed concerns about the deal, with Stand.earth's climate finance director, Richard Brooks, calling it 'a major step backwards for climate action'.
