Germany Launches Fifth Floating LNG Terminal Amid Diversification Push
Germany's fifth floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal is set to begin operations in September, with a first commissioning cargo expected in November. The Stade terminal will host the Energos Force floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU), which was previously sub-chartered to Egyptian oil and gas company EGAS and deployed in Jordan due to delays in the German project.
The terminal is part of a wider effort to diversify Germany's energy supplies, following the cut-off of Russian pipeline deliveries in 2022. The country has been slow to fill its gas storage this summer, with filling levels last seen at 53.6 per cent, and will rely on LNG imports to meet demand this winter.
The operator, Deutsche Energy Terminal (DET), is preparing the allocation of capacities at the terminal and will inform the market of any auctions in due course. The company expects a first commissioning cargo in Stade in November.
