Germany Seeks Algerian Gas Deals Amid Energy Crunch Fears
Germany is seeking to diversify its gas supply by negotiating deals with Algeria, according to German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul. Speaking from Algiers, where he joined a business delegation visiting the North African country, Wadephul emphasized the need for long-term gas contracts.
With gas storage depots only half full as autumn approaches, Germany is looking to reduce its reliance on Norwegian piped gas and American liquefied natural gas. The US-Israeli war on Iran has put pressure on gas prices, leading to fears of a possible energy crunch this winter.
The German government has mandated that most gas storage facilities must be at least 80 percent full by November 1. Wadephul met with Energy Minister Mourad Adjal and representatives of German companies seeking long-term contracts were present during the visit.
