Germany's Gas Reserve Refusal Could Spark Brutal Winter Prices
Natural gas reserves in Europe are at their lowest level since 2011, threatening shortages and price hikes this winter. According to Politico, Germany's refusal to intervene or oblige state-owned companies to purchase gas at current prices has left the country with gas reserves at just 47% of national storage capacity.
This is a concern not only for Germany but also for the entire EU, as its gas storage accounts for more than 20% of the bloc's total storage capacity. Politico notes that meeting the EU's winter target will be impossible unless the bloc offers a higher price for gas to be delivered to Europe.
The European Commission has stated that the bloc does not face supply shortage risks this winter, but an analysis by Rapidan shows that reserves will only reach 65% of total storage capacity by November. This is 16% below the five-year average and poses a significant challenge for EU countries as they struggle to replenish gas storage facilities.
