Germany's Gas Storage Levels Hit Historic Lows as Winter Approaches
Germany's gas storage levels are historically low as it enters the heating season. According to Initiative Energien Speichern (INES), underground gas storage levels stood at roughly 53% as of September 1, 2026, which is a level described by INES as historically low.
Irene Rummelhoff, Executive Vice President Marketing, Midstream and Processing (MMP) at Equinor ASA, stated that Germany would manage to secure its winter gas supply, but at the cost of a heavier energy bill. Norway and American LNG are central to Germany's diversification efforts, which aim to replace Russian pipeline gas deliveries.
Germany is also exploring other diversification avenues with Algeria and Tunisia, in a pattern comparable to what has been observed in Serbia, where Chinese capital is gradually replacing dependence on Russian gas. However, INES warned of winter-related risks and called for support measures, while the federal government appeared less concerned about these issues.
