Ghanaian Government Accused of Breaking Fuel Price Promises
Sammi Awuku, former Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), has criticized the Ghanaian government over its handling of fuel prices. The government had promised to use the Price Stabilisation and Recovery Levy to cushion consumers during periods of price shocks, but instead increased the levy by GH¢1 per litre in July 2025.
Awuku pointed out that despite the increase, pump prices continue to rise, with petrol selling at GH¢14.53 per litre, a 9.4% jump, and diesel at GH¢16.97 per litre, an 18.3% increase.
He questioned whether the current pricing mechanism is effective in protecting consumers, citing instances where global crude oil prices declined but pump prices remained high due to the National Petroleum Authority's (NPA) price floor system.
