GLD vs SLVP: Gold Bullion vs Silver Mining Stocks in the Precious Metals Market
The debate over whether to invest in gold bullion or silver mining stocks has been ongoing for years. The two most popular options are SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) and iShares MSCI Global Silver and Metals Miners ETF (SLVP). GLD provides exposure to the spot price of gold by holding physical bars in secure vaults, while SLVP targets the equity side of the metals market through silver mining stocks.
The two funds have different expense ratios, with SLVP at 0.39% and GLD at 0.40%. This means that for every $10,000 invested, the annual fee difference amounts to just one dollar. However, this minimal cost difference should not be the primary factor in choosing between the two funds.
GLD has a more stable performance history, with a maximum drawdown of 26.4% over the past five years. In contrast, SLVP's maximum drawdown was 47.7%. While GLD outperformed SLVP over the past decade, SLVP has been gaining ground in recent years, returning 49% compared to GLD's 27.7% over the past three years.
Investors who choose SLVP can benefit from dividend payments and potential mergers and acquisitions within the portfolio companies. However, this comes with increased business-specific volatility and management risks.
