The Iran war of 2026 has had a profound impact on global energy markets. One key player that benefited from this disruption was Glencore, a diversified commodity trading house. According to recent data, Glencore's energy trading profits soared during the conflict, with adjusted EBIT reaching $2.66 billion in the first half of 2026.

This represents a staggering 66-fold increase from the same period in 2025 and is one of the most dramatic single-half trading earnings rebounds in the company's history. The broader marketing division, which includes energy, metals, and agricultural products, generated total adjusted EBIT of approximately $3.3 billion.

The key to Glencore's success lies in its integrated business model, combining upstream production assets with physical logistics and trading desk operations. This allowed the company to capture not just price upside but also structural arbitrage created by supply rerouting and freight disruption. The conflict had already conditioned markets for volatility due to preceding trade tensions, making Glencore's pre-positioned infrastructure all the more valuable when the Iran conflict escalated.

CEO Gary Nagle confirmed that the Oil and Gas department was the primary contributor to the result, with the division benefiting from significant dislocations across LNG, oil, and shipping markets simultaneously. The result positions Glencore for what could be its strongest energy trading performance since the 2022 Russia-Ukraine energy crisis.
