Glencore Stands Between Anglo-Teck and Massive Copper Prize
Anglo American's $53-billion merger with Teck is facing a hurdle in Chile as Glencore, which owns 44% of the Collahuasi copper mine, is negotiating over the integration of its operations with Teck's nearby Quebrada Blanca complex. The talks are crucial for Anglo-Teck to capture an estimated $1.4 billion in annual earnings from combining the two mines.
The proposed merger aims to link Collahuasi's high-grade ore to QB's processing facilities through a 15-kilometre conveyor, which could add 175,000 tonnes of copper per year between 2030 and 2049 at lower costs and shorter timelines. However, Glencore is expected to play hardball in negotiations over the assets' relative valuations and management of the combined operations.
Copper prices have been on the rise due to supply constraints and growing demand from power grids and other industries. Anglo's copper exposure has increased significantly since its restructuring plan, with the metal generating almost three-quarters of earnings this year compared to less than a third in 2023.
