Global Economy Stakes Rise as Oil Prices Climb Above $100
Oil prices have surged above $100 per barrel due to ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Analysts warn that this prolonged period of high crude prices could severely impact the global economy, driving up inflation and making food and transport more expensive.
Noureldeen Al Hammoury, chief market strategist at Equiti Group, stated that rising energy expenses would gradually seep into transportation, manufacturing, and food costs. This would undermine recent inflation improvements and raise the probability that major central banks maintain elevated interest rates for a longer period.
Despite consumer inflation decelerating in June due to a short-lived US-Iran ceasefire, renewed hostilities are stoking worries about higher inflation and global economic deceleration. The US Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged last month but officials indicated that a rate increase might be their next step as inflation concerns mount.
