Global Fishmeal Supplies Tighten Amid El Niño Disruptions
Global fishmeal and oil production remains under pressure due to El Niño conditions disrupting anchovy fisheries in Peru and Chile. The climate phenomenon has reduced raw material availability, tightening supplies across international markets.
Peru's North-Central anchovy fishery, which typically accounts for 20% of global fishmeal production, has been severely affected by El Niño. Only 25% of the quota was harvested in the first season due to repeated closures and suspensions of activity.
Chile also struggled with catches below last year's levels, and a high proportion of juvenile fish limiting additional harvesting opportunities. European supplies are declining, but this is unrelated to El Niño.
