Global Food Prices Bracing for New Surge Amid Weather Woes and Conflict
Global food prices may experience another surge due to adverse weather conditions and ongoing conflicts in various regions. According to Bloomberg, Russia and Ukraine account for over a quarter of global wheat trade, two-thirds of sunflower oil exports, and one-tenth of corn exports. Shipments through the Black Sea have been disrupted, exacerbating the situation.
The extreme heat, drought, and wildfires in Europe are expected to lead to the largest decline in grain production in decades. Additionally, US and Israeli military operations against Iran have driven up fuel and fertilizer prices. The climate phenomenon of El Niño is also seen as a risk factor, potentially affecting major rice producers and exporters.
Bloomberg notes that these factors could trigger a new wave of growth in global food prices. The agency highlights the importance of monitoring these developments to mitigate potential price increases.
