Global Food Prices Edge Higher Amid Weather Concerns and Supply Risks
Global food prices rose slightly in July, driven by increases in cereal, sugar, and vegetable oil prices. The FAO Food Price Index increased 0.6% from June to an average of 131.1 points, but remains 18.2% below its historic peak reached in March 2022.
The biggest contributors to the rise were cereals, which saw a 3.4% increase, and sugar, which jumped 5.6%. Cereal prices rose due to concerns about weather conditions and supply risks in major producing regions, particularly in the Black Sea area and parts of the U.S. Corn Belt.
Vegetable oil prices also increased, up 2.0%, as palm oil prices surged due to strong demand from Indonesia's biodiesel sector and higher crude oil prices.
On the other hand, meat and dairy prices declined in July, with the FAO meat price index falling 2.8% and the dairy price index decreasing 0.7%. These declines helped moderate the overall increase in global food commodity prices.
