Global Food Prices Hit Four-Year High Amid Supply Concerns
Global food prices have reached their highest level since late 2022, according to the FAO Food Price Index. In August, the index rose 1.9% from July, with grains, sugar, and dairy products contributing to the increase.
The price of wheat increased by 2.6% during the month, driven by concerns over supply availability from key producing regions. Weaker harvests in Europe could lead to a greater reliance on imports of food and agricultural commodities.
The sharpest price rise was seen in the sugar market, with global prices jumping 11.9% in August. This outpaced the overall increase in the food price index and became one of its main drivers.
Adverse weather conditions and trade disruptions are adding to uncertainty over future supplies of major agricultural commodities.
