Global Food Prices Hit Three-and-a-Half-Year High Amid Geopolitical Tensions and Heat Waves
Global food prices have risen to their highest level in three and a half years, according to a recent report from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The FAO's price index for basic food products averaged 131.1 points in July, a 0.6% increase from June.
The rise in prices is largely driven by higher wheat and corn costs due to geopolitical tensions in the Black Sea region and heat waves affecting this year's crops in several key producing countries.
Cereal prices increased by 3.4% in July, with wheat prices rising as much as 5.8% due to concerns over exports from the Black Sea region and damage to export infrastructure.
