Global Food Prices Hit Three-Year High Amid Ukraine War Disruptions

Global food prices have reached their highest level since November 2022, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The FAO's Food Price Index averaged 133.3 points in August, up from 130.8 points in July.

The main drivers of this increase were adverse weather conditions in Europe and trade disruptions caused by military hostilities in Ukraine and Iran. These factors have heightened concerns about supplies of staple foods and driven grain prices to a three-year high.

FAO Chief Economist Maximo Torero noted that 'a risk premium is returning to food markets: climate shocks, geopolitical tensions and disruptions to trade logistics are acting simultaneously, intensifying supply outlook concerns.'
