Global Food Prices Reach New High Since January 2023

Global food prices reached their highest level since January 2023 in July, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The FAO's Food Price Index rose by 0.6% from June and was 1% higher than a year earlier.

The increase was driven primarily by higher prices for cereals, vegetable oils, and sugar. Global wheat prices climbed 5.8%, largely due to disruptions in export flows from the Black Sea region and hot weather affecting major producing countries.

Vegetable oil prices reached their highest level since June 2022, supported by strong demand for palm oil in Indonesia and rising crude oil prices. Sugar prices rose 5.6% as drought in the European Union and El Niño weather conditions in Asia raised concerns over supply.
