Global Food Prices Rise Amid Heatwaves and Energy Price Hikes
Food prices increased by one percent in July compared to last year due to heatwaves and energy price hikes, according to data from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
The FAO's Food Price Index update showed that staple foods like sugar, cereals, and wheat experienced significant price surges. Sugar prices rose by 5.6 percent in July, while cereal prices increased by 3.4 percent.
Global wheat prices also rose by 5.8 percent due to disruptions in Black Sea exports caused by the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The FAO attributed the price increases to heatwaves affecting crop yields in several countries.

However, an estimated 1.9 million people in Malawi remain in crisis levels of acute food insecurity, and this number is expected to rise to 2.6 million during the lean season from October 2026 to March 2027.
