Global Food Prices Rise Amid Heatwaves and Geopolitical Tensions
Global food prices have increased by 1% in July compared to the same period last year, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The rise is attributed to heatwaves, energy price increases, and geopolitical tensions affecting agricultural markets.
The FAO Food Price Index shows that a basket of key staple foods cost more in July. Sugar recorded the sharpest monthly increase, rising 5.6% due to concerns over hot and dry weather reducing crop yields in Europe and Asia.
Cereal prices also rose by 3.4% from June, with global wheat prices climbing 5.8%. Disruptions to Black Sea exports amid Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine are contributing to the increase.
