Global Food Prices Soar as Weather, Politics, and Trade Disruptions Converge
Global food prices have risen sharply as extreme weather, geopolitical tensions, and disrupted trade routes combine to threaten supply chains. The FAO's August index reached its highest level since November 2022, with a 1.9% increase to 133.3 points.
The rise was broad-based, affecting cereals, vegetable oils, sugar, meat, and dairy prices. Cereal prices reached their highest level in three years, while sugar prices climbed to over a year high.
FAO chief economist Maximo Torero attributed the pressure on food markets to the convergence of climate shocks, geopolitical tensions, and disrupted trade logistics.
