Global Food Prices Surge to Highest Since November 2022 Amid Supply Risks
Global food prices have surged to their highest since November 2022 as supply risks intensify, according to the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
The FAO's August report shows that extreme heat and drought in Europe, combined with the threat of a severe El Nino weather pattern, have pushed grain prices to three-year highs and sugar to a one-year peak.
Additionally, trade upheaval caused by the Ukraine-Russia conflict has further disrupted supply chains. The FAO's Food Price Index averaged 133.3 points in August, up from July's revised reading of 130.8.
The index is nearly 17% below its record peak from March 2022. FAO Chief Economist Maximo Torero warned that 'climate shocks, geopolitical tensions, and disrupted trade logistics are converging to tighten supply expectations.'
