A study from BIS Oxford Economics has projected a significant increase in global food prices by the end of 2026 and 2027. According to the forecast, prices could rise by 12% by the end of next year and an additional 5% in 2027.

The prediction reflects several risks hitting the food system at once, including harvest damage from droughts and heat waves in Europe, rising grain prices tied to the war in Ukraine, and fertilizer and natural gas shortages linked to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Darren Francis News (@darrenfrancisnews) described the situation as a 'perfect storm' for a food crisis, with farmers and harvests facing pressure from every direction. An unusually severe El Niño could also add more strain by bringing drought to some regions and storms to others, further threatening harvests worldwide.

Food-price projections can have far-reaching effects on the economy, as they can ripple through the food chain, raising expenses for farmers, manufacturers, distributors, and grocery stores. Extreme weather can make these pressures even harder to manage, and repeated disruptions can drive up staples such as bread, produce, and animal-protein products.
