Global Grain Prices Soar Amid Ukraine Conflict Fears
Global grain and oilseed prices surged on Wednesday after reports indicated that Russian President Vladimir Putin is considering escalating the war in Ukraine, which could disrupt grain vessel traffic in the Black Sea.
The Chicago Board of Trade saw significant increases in wheat futures, with soft wheat rising by 45 cents per bushel, and Kansas City hard red winter wheat increasing by approximately 40 cents. Minneapolis spring wheat also gained 30 cents.
The European Commission reported a decline in EU soft wheat exports since July 1, totaling 2.38 million tonnes, down from 3.56 million last year.
Soybean prices rose nearly 30 cents due to the Black Sea news and strong export demand. The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced a private export sale for 333,000 tonnes of 2026-27 soybeans to China, while China's Sinograin sold 222,782 out of 290,000 imported soybeans in an auction.
Corn prices reached three-year highs due to hot and dry conditions forecasted for the U.S. Corn Belt next week, which could threaten yields.
