Global Monetary Tightening Squeezes Gold Prices
Global monetary policy is shifting towards tightening, raising concerns for gold prices. Inflation expectations have increased due to rising oil costs and escalating tensions in the Middle East. This has driven investors to safe-haven assets, supporting XAU/USD.
However, higher interest rates and Treasury yields are also weighing on gold. The 30-year real yield reached a new high of 2.987% since 2008, eroding gold's relative attractiveness. Rising real yields are a critical factor for gold prices.
This is not a US-only story; the cost of capital is increasing globally. The European Central Bank has kept its rate at 2.25%, but markets expect an 80% chance of a September hike. The Reserve Bank of Australia and Japanese Government Bond yields have also seen significant increases, indicating monetary tightening.
