Global Motor Oil Shortage Sparks Industry Panic
The global automotive industry is facing a severe shortage of motor oil due to disruptions in Middle Eastern production, which supplies over 40% of Group III base oils used in premium lubricants. These high-quality base oils are essential for modern engines, and their absence has led to skyrocketing prices, with some reaching $4,000 per tonne in Europe and the US.
Major automakers like Volkswagen, Stellantis, and Toyota are being forced to adapt to the tighter supplies by searching for alternative sources and reformulating certain lubricants. The shortage highlights a previously overlooked vulnerability in the automotive supply chain, where sophisticated motor oils depend on specialized chemical components sourced from a limited number of producers.
The Middle East has become a crucial hub for Group III base oil production, with Qatar's Shell Pearl gas-to-liquids facility playing a significant role. However, this facility was damaged during the conflict, and repairs are expected to take at least 12 months, exacerbating the shortage.
