Global Oil Prices Surge as US-Israel Conflict with Iran Intensifies
The escalating conflict between the US and Israel has sent global oil prices soaring to nearly $120 per barrel, levels not seen since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The war on Iran is having a devastating impact on energy markets, with unprecedented attacks on infrastructure and shipping disruptions.
According to industry experts, it will take years for the region to recover from the upheaval caused by air strikes and Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which accounts for 20% of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas exports. Qatar has estimated that a damaged liquefied natural gas facility will take years to repair.
The CERAWeek energy conference in Houston is set to begin on Monday, with over 10,000 attendees from more than 80 countries expected to focus on the crisis in the Middle East and Venezuela's potential for oil production. Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado is scheduled to address attendees on Tuesday afternoon.
The conflict has also had a significant impact on the US economy, with diesel prices topping $5 per gallon for the first time since 2022 and gasoline pump prices moving toward $4 per gallon. U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright has predicted a 'dramatic increase' in Venezuela's production in the coming months.
