Global Oil Shortages Escalate as Ukraine and Iran Conflicts Intensify
The ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Iran are escalating global oil shortages, with little sign of relief on the horizon. The use of advanced technologies such as autonomous drones and automated seafaring vessels has allowed warring parties to target energy infrastructure more effectively than ever before.
According to Goldman Sachs, the global refining deficit has reached 6.5 million barrels per day due to the destruction of Russian refineries and disruptions in oil exports from the Middle East. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has cut off 20% of the world's supply of liquefied petroleum gas, further exacerbating the crisis.
The situation is particularly dire for countries that rely heavily on imports for their energy needs. For example, India is struggling to find and afford cooking fuel, forcing people to skip meals. China's imports of crude oil and petroleum-related products have dropped by 3.6 million barrels per day since the Iran war started.
However, some signs suggest that efforts to increase domestic energy production may be paying off. Brazil has seen a 14% increase in oil production from government-owned company Petrobras, while Venezuelan oil production has risen to 1.2 million barrels per day.
