Global Supply Chains: Where Production Meets Export
China has the world's largest sheep flock, with between 170 million and 190 million head. However, Australia is the country that exports the most sheepmeat.
This disparity raises interesting questions about global supply chains. The article examined 13 commodities to see how often the biggest producer was also the biggest exporter. The results show that only a little more than half of the time, the two titles are held by the same country.
One example is wheat, where China produces about 141 million tonnes but exports less because it consumes most of its crop domestically. Russia, on the other hand, has smaller production volumes but still exports more wheat because of its focus on international trade.
Brazil stands out as a genuine agricultural heavyweight because it often manages to be both the largest producer and exporter of certain commodities. This is due to its scale and domestic market size, which allows for significant exportable surpluses.
