Gold and Silver Rise Amid Strait of Hormuz Deal Uncertainty

The gold and silver prices have risen despite conflicting signals from various sources regarding a potential Strait of Hormuz deal. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CNBC that such a deal could arrive 'today or tomorrow' with terms guaranteeing freedom of movement for commercial ships, which led to lower oil prices and an increase in the precious metals.

However, within hours of this statement, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) confirmed that a cargo vessel had reported being hit by an unknown projectile in the strait. Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson denied any talks with Washington, stating that negotiations run through Oman only.

The contradiction in signals has led to market uncertainty, which is reflected in the mixed signals from various Fed officials regarding potential interest rate hikes in September. The CME FedWatch Tool shows a 65% probability of a hike in September, but some officials have hinted at a more cautious approach.

The JOLTS report released today showed job openings at 7.44 million, down from 7.6 million in May, which could potentially lower rate-hike odds and give gold room to rise towards $4,150. NY Fed President John Williams stated that the Fed is 'well-positioned' to reach 2% inflation, but will intervene if necessary, which suggests a more flexible approach than previously thought.
