Gold Correction Debate Heats Up as Sprott and Citadel Weigh In
Market watchers are weighing in on whether the gold correction is over, and two heavyweight asset management firms have differing views.
Sprott Asset Management's Chief Investment Officer, Maria Smirnova, believes that the multi-month pullback in gold represents a cyclical correction rather than a trend reversal. She cites soaring debt, persistent fiscal deficits, central bank buying, and geopolitical fragmentation as ongoing factors that reinforce gold's strategic role.
Smirnova notes that after both metals extended gains to new all-time highs in January 2026, they experienced a meaningful correction. By the end of the second quarter, gold had stabilized between $4,000 and $4,100 an ounce, with silver finding support in the $55, $60 range.
Citadel Securities' Head of Equity and Equity Derivatives Strategy, Scott Rubner, disagrees, calling the current environment 'one of the more compelling upside setups we have seen in precious metals in months.' He identifies five positive catalysts converging: a dovish Fed rate path, accelerating central bank purchases, net short positioning by CTAs, an inverted put/call skew in options, and growing retail participation.
