Gold ETF Inflows Soar to $18 Billion Amid Debt Fears

The World Gold Council reported that gold ETF inflows reached $18 billion in August, making it the second-largest capital intake ever recorded. This marks a significant shift in investor sentiment, with many turning to gold as a safeguard against global sovereign debt expansion.

North American vehicles pulled in $7.7 billion last month, their third-strongest monthly intake ever. European-based funds recorded $7.9 billion of inflows, their largest monthly figure on record. Asia saw regional ETFs draw $2 billion, with China leading the charge as firmer and recovering domestic gold prices enticed investor interest.

The World Gold Council stated that future investment demand hinges on whether markets trust that the U.S. Treasury can contain bond yields. The 10-year yield remains near its highest point in three years at 4.83%. Analysts noted that the specific shape of any intervention matters less than market perception, and that a successful move would likely prevent spillover effects.

For the year so far, worldwide gold ETF inflows reached $29 billion, corresponding to a 160-tonne rise in holdings. This underscores the growing role of gold as a portfolio diversifier and substitute for government debt.
