Gold Funds Surge in China Amid Rising Bullion Prices
International gold prices have been on the rise since early August, driving up both the size and net asset value of China's gold-themed funds. As of August 20, the combined scale of these funds reached 422.14 billion yuan (approximately $62.8 billion), a month-over-month increase of over 20 billion yuan ($3.0 billion) and more than 40 billion yuan ($6.0 billion) from the start of the year.
Huaan Gold ETF led the pack, holding assets worth 101.94 billion yuan (approximately $15.2 billion), making it the only gold ETF in China to exceed the 100 billion yuan threshold.
The strong performance in bullion prices has also fueled capital inflows into Chinese gold funds and lifted their net asset values. Gold mining stock ETFs delivered the most outstanding performance, with six funds posting one-month NAV gains ranging from 24.78% to 25.45%. In contrast, gold ETFs and QDII funds directly tracking bullion prices rose only about 8%.
Fund managers attribute the rally to concerns over the US dollar credit system, citing fading market expectations for a Federal Reserve rate hike in September and worries about the sustainability of high rates due to elevated US debt levels.
