Gold Gains Attraction as Dollar Outlook Deteriorates
The U.S. dollar's outlook has darkened in recent times, and investors are taking notice. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently announced that the Treasury could use $1 trillion of Treasury General Account money to fund bond buybacks, a move that has added to concerns about the currency.
This development, combined with rising yields and a growing debt burden, has made the dollar appear increasingly precarious. As a result, gold ETFs like AAAU (the Goldman Sachs Physical Gold ETF) are gaining attention as potential solutions for investors looking to protect their portfolios.
AAAU's strategy allows it to track the spot price of gold, and its fees are relatively low at 18 basis points. The fund invests in bars held in the U.K., with the daily NAV set using the LBMA PM Gold Price. This approach provides a straightforward way for investors to gain exposure to gold.
In recent months, AAAU has returned 7% YTD, outperforming the ETF Database Precious Metals category average over the same period. The fund's long-term performance is also impressive, consistently beating peer gold and metals ETFs over three- and five-year periods.
