Gold Holds Firm Above $4,200 as U.S. Jobless Claims Stay Sub-200k
The price of gold is holding above $4,200 an ounce despite some volatility in overnight trading. The metal's resilience comes as U.S. labor market data shows a continued strong performance, with initial jobless claims remaining below 200,000 for the third consecutive week.
The Labor Department reported that first-time unemployment claims rose by 1,000 to a seasonally adjusted 199,000 for the week ending August 1. This figure was in line with expectations and marks the longest streak of sub-200,000 jobless claims since March 2023.
Gold prices have retreated from their overnight high above $4,300 an ounce but remain supported at around $4,265.60, a 0.45% gain on the day. The market's reaction to labor data has been muted following disappointing private-sector job gains reported by ADP on Wednesday.
