Gold Holds Ground Near $4,000 Amid Middle East Tensions and Inflation Worries

Gold has held its ground near $4,000 per ounce for five straight weeks, despite several headwinds, including escalating tensions in the Middle East and higher crude prices. Analysts are mixed on the metal's prospects, with some seeing potential for a bullish turn as inflation worries intensify.

Lukman Otunuga, Senior Market Analyst at FXTM, notes that US monetary policy is shrouded in uncertainty, making inflation data highly influential in determining gold's direction. He expects a strong inflation reading to bring $4,000 back into focus as a downside target, while a moderating price environment could provide relief for the metal.

Other analysts, however, are more cautious, citing rising interest rate expectations and the potential for higher energy prices to reverse recent inflation declines. Bart Melek, Head of Commodity Strategy at TD Securities, believes that climbing real interest rates will make it difficult to support increasing long gold positions, and that a higher-rate environment could push the metal back to support near $3,900 per ounce.
