Gold Holds Steady Near $4,000 Amid Fed Uncertainty and Strained Dollar
The gold price is holding steady near $4,058.90 an ounce as investors balance a stronger dollar and rising Treasury yields against uncertainty over the Federal Reserve's next move. The Fed held interest rates at 3.50% to 3.75% in a 9-3 vote on July 29, but Chair Kevin Warsh's press conference provided little clarity on future policy.
Kevin Warsh is quoted as saying that markets are still debating the Fed's new operating approach and seeking higher Treasury yields as a tightening channel for financial conditions and inflation restraint. This has led to increased demand for risk premium on Treasuries, pushing yields higher even as the central bank avoids an immediate hike.
The Strait of Hormuz situation is still unresolved, but the immediate inflation-risk channel has eased slightly. Iran claims it's not in talks with the US, while also pointing to progress in its dialogue with Oman over reopening the strait. A durable reopening would reduce the risk of another oil-price spike and lower the probability that energy inflation forces the Fed into additional tightening.
