Gold Market Staggers Between Central Bank Buying and Hawkish Rate Expectations

The gold market is experiencing a rare display of crosscurrents as central banks and hawkish Federal Reserve officials create opposing forces. On one hand, official-sector buyers are accumulating bullion at a record pace, driven by 45% of central banks polled intending to increase their reserves over the next year.

Central bank buying has rebounded sharply in the second quarter, with purchases reaching 289 tonnes. The World Gold Council's quarterly report highlights Poland as the largest purchaser, adding 51 tonnes and bringing its first-half total to 82 tonnes.

In contrast, the Federal Reserve Committee voted 9-3 to maintain its target rate, but three dissenting votes carried significant weight, marking the first time since September 2016 that three committee members have favored tighter policy. Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack, Minneapolis's Neel Kashkari, and Dallas's Lorie Logan each pushed for a quarter-point hike.

The resulting climb in Treasury yields has pressured gold, while currency dynamics added another layer of complexity as the greenback regained its footing after suspected Japanese intervention.
