Gold Mining ETFs Soar as Fiscal Concerns Boost Gold Prices
South Korea's ETF market has seen significant swings in recent days, with gold mining ETFs and SK Hynix leveraged products leading the pack. According to data from the Korea Exchange, 'HANARO Global Gold Mining Companies' rose 11.94% between August 18-21, while 'ACE Gold Futures Leverage (Synthetic H)' climbed 9.12%. The surge in gold mining ETFs reflects investment demand spreading to mining companies, which benefit disproportionately from higher gold prices through improved earnings.
The rally is attributed to structural fiscal concerns driving a decline in confidence in the dollar, leading to higher gold prices. Analyst Ko Kyung-bum at Yuanta Securities noted that 'the level of interest rates does not determine gold's direction, but rather the reason behind their rise.' With long-term rates rising simultaneously in major economies, gold miners are expected to show greater upside momentum due to high fixed costs and rapid profit margin improvements when gold prices rise.
On the other hand, defense, secondary battery, and KOSDAQ leveraged products posted significant losses. 'PLUS K-Defense Leverage' fell 19.97%, while 'KODEX Defense TOP10 Leverage' dropped 19.61%. Analyst Oh Jae-young at KB Securities cautioned that uncertainty surrounding a potential U.S.-Iran conflict and associated Federal Reserve tightening concerns may persist, making it difficult to expect a sustained uptrend.
