Gold Plunges as US Inflation Fears Persist Amid Iran Tensions
Gold prices retreated over $100 from their highest level since June 5 on Thursday, hovering near the daily low of around $4,375-$4,370. The initial market reaction to signs of moderating US inflation was short-lived as investors remained concerned about potential interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the headline US Consumer Price Index (CPI) eased from 3.5% to 3.4% YoY in July, matching market expectations. However, core CPI rose 0.2% and 2.5% on a monthly and yearly basis, respectively.
The prospect of higher energy prices due to the ongoing US-Iran standoff continues to fuel inflation fears, supporting the case for some Fed tightening. The CME Group's FedWatch Tool indicates traders are pricing in an nearly 80% chance that the US central bank will raise borrowing costs in 2026.
