Gold Price Near $4,400 as US Inflation Data Looms
The price of gold has risen to nearly $4,400 as investors await the release of US inflation data that could determine whether the metal's August rebound will continue. The price of spot gold rose 0.5% to about $4,387 an ounce in Asian trading, holding close to the two-month high reached a day earlier.
The recent geopolitical tensions have increased safe-haven demand for gold, with investors seeking defensive assets as the situation worsens in the Middle East. The Houthi attack on an Egyptian-owned vessel and US military action against a ship heading towards Iran have raised concerns about a broader escalation around major shipping routes.
Gold's rebound has been driven by weaker labor data reducing expectations for another immediate Federal Reserve rate increase, with gold rising more than 8% so far in August. The World Gold Council expects investment to remain the main source of gold-demand growth through the rest of 2026, with Asian and over-the-counter buying becoming increasingly important.
The July consumer prices report will be a key indicator for gold's price movement, with economists expecting headline CPI to increase 0.1% from June. A softer inflation report would strengthen the argument for keeping rates unchanged, potentially pulling Treasury yields and the dollar lower, which would boost non-yielding gold.
