Gold Price Surges Amid US Treasury Buyback Plans
The gold price is up by around 4% this week, bringing the 200-day moving average to approximately $4 514 an ounce. This surge in value comes as a result of the US Treasury's unexpected increase in buybacks of long-dated government debt, which has underscored concerns about its burden.
The surprise liquidity injection by the US Treasury on Wednesday sent yields and the dollar lower, while boosting bullion. On Thursday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that he is prepared to expand buybacks of costlier debt and flagged that the administration would soon unveil a fiscal initiative to address the highest borrowing costs in years.
Bullion has held up despite long-end Treasury yields remaining elevated, according to Charu Chanana, chief investment strategist at Saxo Markets. She noted that gold's rally is increasingly about dollar weakness and US fiscal or monetary credibility rather than simply lower-yields. Should gold close above the 200-day moving average, 'that would be an important technical signal after several failed attempts to regain momentum,' she added.
