Gold Prices Caught Between Geopolitical Tensions and Fed Hawkishness

Gold prices remain volatile as the market grapples with conflicting signals from geopolitical tensions and the Federal Reserve's hawkish stance. The precious metal closed at $4,452.18 per troy ounce on Monday, virtually flat on the day.

The Hormuz Strait oil traffic has decreased to 22 percent of its pre-conflict levels, resulting in a sharp rally for Brent crude. However, this should theoretically send investors into gold's safe-haven embrace, but instead, rising oil prices reinforce inflation expectations, which embolden the Fed's restrictive posture.

A survey by Kitco reveals a divided analyst camp, with 48 percent anticipating higher gold prices in the week ahead and 29 percent expecting further declines. Retail investors are more bullish, with nearly six in ten respondents projecting gains.

The central banks' strategic purchases provide a stabilizing counterweight to the speculative flows driving recent volatility. Central banks purchased a record 289 tonnes of gold net during Q2, and institutions plan to increase their reserves within the next twelve months.
