Gold Prices Hold Near $4,000 Amid Profit-Taking
Gold prices remain near $4,000, but EverBank's Chris Gaffney attributes the recent selling to profit-taking rather than panic. According to Gaffney, his trading desk has observed a higher number of sellers than buyers, but this trend does not indicate diminished faith in gold's long-term prospects.
Gaffney explained that investors who profited from gold's exceptional rally are securing gains while awaiting a more favorable entry point. He noted that the selling is not driven by liquidity needs, unlike previous instances in equity markets where investors liquidated their sole asset to compensate for losses elsewhere.
The retail investors, Gaffney stated, are aware of their significant profits following gold's strong upward movement and are opting to step back near a key technical juncture. They are selling and waiting to re-enter at a lower price, not acting out of desperation or to cover losses in other areas, he added.
Gaffney characterized this behavior as indicative of a robust market, suggesting that the precious metals sector remains fundamentally sound despite the recent downturn. He observed that investors are not flocking to gold-backed exchange-traded funds as a safe-haven play because many anticipate that current Middle East tensions will subside.
