Gold Prices Near $4,400 as Geopolitical Tensions Escalate
Gold prices neared $4,400 on Wednesday as geopolitical tensions escalated and investors awaited the release of US inflation data. The metal has risen more than 8% in August, rebounding from the $4,000 area after weaker labour data reduced expectations for another Federal Reserve rate increase.
The current geopolitical risks have raised concerns about a broader escalation around major Middle Eastern shipping routes, with North Korea launching a ballistic missile and a deadly Houthi attack on an Egyptian-owned vessel in the Red Sea. Unlike oil, gold is reacting through investor demand for defensive assets, which has additional support from investment flows.
Global physically backed gold exchange-traded funds attracted about $3 billion in July, reversing some of the weakness seen earlier this year. The World Gold Council expects investment to remain the main source of gold-demand growth through the rest of 2026, with Asian and over-the-counter buying becoming increasingly important.
