Gold Prices Plummet After Warsh's Hawkish Inflation Comments
Gold prices plummeted in India on Thursday, experiencing their biggest drop since July. The decline was sparked by comments from US Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh at the annual Jackson Hole conference.
Warsh reaffirmed the central bank's commitment to bringing inflation back down to its 2% target, sending a strong signal that interest rates may be on the rise in the near future.
As a result, spot gold fell as much as 2% to around $4,485.76 an ounce, while silver dropped about 3.5%. The decline came after investors reassessed their expectations for US interest rates following Warsh's hawkish remarks.
The Fed chairman emphasized the importance of short-term interest rates in achieving economic objectives and suggested that unconventional policies should be used sparingly outside genuine crises.
Gold is particularly sensitive to interest rate expectations because it does not generate interest or dividends, making it more attractive when interest rates are low. However, with higher Treasury yields and a strengthening US dollar, the opportunity cost of holding gold increased.
