Gold Prices Plummet Amid US-Iran Conflict and Hawkish Fed Comments
Gold prices have seen significant fluctuations in recent weeks, surging nearly 15-16% in August before dropping back down. As of September 3rd, gold is trading at around $4,451 per troy ounce, roughly £3,285 per ounce (about £106 per gram) at current exchange rates. This represents a drop from the late-August peak of around $4,650.
The Federal Reserve's hawkish comments and rising US-Iran conflict have contributed to gold's recent decline. Despite this, several banks and analysts have updated their gold price targets in the past two weeks, with Natixis predicting a year-end target of $5,000, citing concerns about US government debt and bond market strain.
Goldman Sachs is targeting $4,900 by year-end 2026, while JPMorgan forecasts an average price near $4,300 in Q3. Citi predicts gold reaching $4,500 by the fourth quarter of 2026. Analysts describe these targets as a potential recovery back toward August's highs rather than a run to new record levels.
